New to K-dramas?
A Quick Anatomy Of K-Dramas: What to Expect
Where Should You Go to Stream Them?
While Viki is free, some content is only accessible in
some regions and sometimes only by their subscribers. There are also a lot of
complaints about the number of advertisements inserted within each episode. It
is the fact that it is free that some could ignore this negative side of the
site. Nevertheless, I use this site very often because the platform is easy to
navigate, and you have a variety of shows to watch. They also regularly add new
shows so you would not run out of things to watch. Viki also has a function
that Netflix does not have: the comment and discussion section. It is a part of
the culture to read comments and discuss your opinions during and after each
episode ends. Getting into K-dramas is like getting into a fanbase. While you
do not have to interact with others, interactions within this community add a
lot of elements to your experience.
Both sites have our classic Boy Over Flowers,
a 2009 K-drama that took over Southeast Asia. They also have Inheritors, written
by the almighty Kim Eun-sook who has numerous ground-breaking series such
as, Descendant of the sun, Guardian: The Lonely and Great
God, Mr Sunshine, and The King: Eternal Monarch.
While you can only watch Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, or
also known as Goblin, on Viki, the rest of these shows are on
Netflix. These past few years, Netflix has been investing in K-dramas and, 99%
of the series they have added in are amazing! Most importantly, they have
Director Shin Won-ho’s Reply series,
a show which everyone must watch. If you cannot view all of them, at least
watch Reply 1988. You’ll be able to
learn a lot about South Korea, its people, and their rich culture if you choose
to start from there and I, your K-dramas Guru, strongly recommend you do
so.
